One of the most constant threats in our society is residential burglary. With the growing violence in cities and also in rural areas, we need to start to be more attentive and take steps not to be victims of criminals out there.
In a crisis scenario this will also be the first index that
will increase exponentially as the economic or social scenario worsens. Let's
show a real case to prove what we're talking about here.
In 1990 Argentina was a relatively safe and prosperous
country. Then, in 2001, the country suffered hyperinflation and economic
collapse. Let's see how much crime increased from 1995 to 2001:
·
Thefts increased by 28.96%;
·
Rape increased by 164.58%;
·
Car theft increased by 248.79%;
·
Robberies increased 5596.94%;
·
Residential theft increased by 512100%
Yeah, you read that right. Unless you're a martial arts
expert straight out of a Hollywood movie, you're going to need a good weapon to
defend your home. Since we are in Brazil and this is difficult, it is easier to
make the bandits not want to break into your house. How to do this? Here are 10
tips to stop them:
Buy a dog – It
doesn't have to be a big animal, but it should have a loud and intimidating
bark;
Remove large plants or shrubs from the front of your
house – If you have a driveway full of plants, all of them can be a good hiding
place for criminals;
Organize communication between your neighbors – If your neighbors are attentive and know your
arrival and departure routine, they can notice when something is wrong and
alert the police;
Attach security and alarm stickers – If you can afford it, install the alarm
system in your home. If you can't, still put stickers on the gate or windows to
discourage intruders;
Buy door and window alarms – These items are
inexpensive and run on batteries, and make a very loud noise if someone tries
to open the door;
Buy fake cameras – Just like the alarm, if you can have them for
real, great. If you can't, installing fake cameras can help discourage burglars
and make them choose another target.
Buy lights with motion sensors – These lights can run easily on solar power
and others have built-in batteries. Lights are one of the biggest demotivating
items for burglars;
Reinforce your doors - Most doors are easy to break
in, but with small steps you can reinforce your doors to the point where
intruders will give up opening them;
Install bars or bars on windows – They can be ugly,
but safety is much more important than aesthetics;
Have a good wall protecting the property – Ideally the wall should be 2.20 meters tall,
have a concertina or spikes on top and have no gaps around your property.
Burglars are like cockroaches, they prefer to work in the
dark and in silence. If you do any of these tips, burglars will likely decide
that your house will be more work than profit for them and will not attack.
